Pips & Pennies

About This Game

Pips and Pennies is a two-player strategy board game played on a board of three concentric circles connected by nine radial spokes. The board has 27 positions (9 spokes x 3 rings). Each player controls two pips (game pieces) and tries to capture pennies by jumping over them. The player who captures the most pennies wins the game.

The game can be played against another person (2-player mode) or against a computer opponent (1-player mode) with three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, and Hard.

The game has three setup phases:

1. Penny Placing Phase
- Nine pennies are placed on the board by both players, taking turns.
- The first player to place pennies gets five; the second gets four.
- Who goes first is randomized each game.
- Click any empty board position to place a penny there.

2. Pip Placing Phase
- Each player places their two pips on any empty board positions.
- The player who placed fewer pennies places pips first.
- Click any empty board position to place a pip there.

3. Game Phase
- Players take turns moving either one of their pips or a penny to try to capture pennies.
- The player who placed pips first takes the first turn.

How to Play

All interactions are performed by clicking (or tapping on mobile).

Click a pip or penny to select it. (You may not select a penny that was moved in the previous turn.) The selected piece is highlighted with a yellow glow and enlarged slightly.
- Valid moves are shown as green circles on the board.
- Valid jumps (captures) are shown as yellow circles on the board.
- Click a highlighted circle to move the selected piece there.
- Click the selected piece again or click empty space to deselect it.

Pips and Pennies is inspired by the board game mentioned in the book "Dragons Ascending" by Amy Beatty. It was developed as a fun project to bring this unique game to life in a digital format. The game is completely free, requires no download or plugins, and runs smoothly on desktop and mobile browsers.
